I’ve just finished reading this book ’12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos’ by Jordan B. Peterson. Pick it up today if possible, even if you have other books on your current reading list. I will tell you why.
The book illustrates pretty simple rules for life that many people might have thought of. The beauty of this book is how Jordan B. Peterson describes the rationales behind each simple rule. It demonstrates the actual value of this book. It was mind-blowing.
Here is the list of 12 rules for life:
- Stand up straight with your shoulders back
- Treat yourself like someone you are responsible for helping
- Make friends with people who want the best for you
- Compare yourself to who you were yesterday, not to who someone else is today
- Do not let your children do anything that makes you dislike them
- Set your house in perfect order before you criticize the world
- Pursue what is meaningful (not what is expedient)
- Tell the truth – or, at least, don’t lie
- Assume that the person you are listening to might know something you don’t
- Be precise in your speech
- Do not bother children when they are skateboarding
- Pet a cat when you encounter one on the street
In the chapter for rule #2 ‘Treat yourself like someone you are responsible for helping‘, for instance, he mentioned that people tend to celebrate other’s achievements more. At the same time, they rarely give positive feedbacks to themselves. Think about the number of times you celebrate other’s life events compared to the frequency of doing so to yourself. You may notice that you are not generous enough to yourself than what you do to others.
He also explains each rule based on the various Bible stories as an example; how Adam’s interaction with God and Hawa explains our human behaviour in modern time. It helped me clear some questions I’ve had for long.
This book also applies the thoughts from Alfred Adler, the philosopher being introduced as the primary source of the book ‘The Courage to be Disliked‘ I’ve recommended in my first article.
Jordan B. Peterson is currently recovering from complicated anxiety therapy. I wish him the fast recovery.
